Film Clapboard

the Festival

Following the theme of this film festival, poetics of empowerment, each of the films are creative works that show different ways in which subjects or communities face and overcome economical, social, sexual, educational, and racial struggles in their process to gain agency and build an identity.

This film festival is designed to promote linguistic and cultural diversity and understanding by exposing students to a wide array of selected films from different countries in Spain and Latin America. We aim to expose students to current issues that have a strong social impact in each particular country as well as globally, and to foster discussion of these topics among students, faculty and guest artists from multiple perspectives.

The festival also aims to recognize and promote the development and understanding of a Hispanic cinema that is rich and plural. This festival continues OWU´s efforts to offer cultural and academic events that are integral to a liberal arts education and that contribute to the general mission of building a campus culture that values every form of diversity.

This year's edition will take place at the Strand Movie Theater in Delaware, Ohio (following COVID-19 safety guidelines). Five international award-winning films will be shown, representing some of the different languages spoken in Spain and Latin America.

There will be movie presentations and post-screening discussions led by students who major in Spanish and Film Studies. We will also have the presence of virtual guest artists during the Q&A sessions.

There will be student resources in the form of movie guides, interviews, and film reviews that will be shared with students who wish to satisfy their cultural, academic or non-academic requirements for a specific course.
